Geno Young – Ear Hustler – Quality New SOUL

2 07 2010

The greatest thing about being on twitter is having access to good music and great artists. Today, Geno Young posted up his new collection, Ear Hustler, for a few hours, giving SoulCuts and a bunch of other soul nerds the chance to get some ear time with what definitely sounds like one of the better soul albums of 2010.

Geno has some pedigree, having written and produced for quality acts like Badu, N’Dambi, Carmen Rodgers and via recent collaborations with the generally accepted king of the indies, Eric Roberson. His 2004 album, The Ghetto Symphony has become a cult classic, and still gets the odd spin in the SoulCuts lounge (particularly Honeydew).

Ear Hustler is a deep album packed with hip-hop flavoured joints (the Low-end Theory vibe of Paper Thin), futuristic funk-soul nuggets (the spacey-synth drenched All I Have), live brassy funk (Condition), Stevie-piano balladry (Was It A Love Song), sweet 70s flavours (the beautifully arranged Gladys), stretched out p-funk (Other Side of Life) jazz (the ballad Crazy) and bags of good stuff all unified by ridiculously tight production from Camp Wisdom (of which Geno is a member).

While the album’s got great artwork, I don’t know why Mr Young’s looking so glum. On this evidence, the box is booming and we have ourselves a real contender. A buy-blind album for any self-respecting soul head. Get your fine selves over to http://www.reverbnation.com/genoyoung for a taste.
