SoulEnvision Delivers an ESSENTIAL Modern Soul Mix – Fanatic About Vol. 1

16 01 2011

Last weekend, one of the UK’s premier soul events took place, namely the Luxury Soul Weekender at Blackpool. With live performances from Cool Million, Al Olive, Jean Carne (superb!) and the somewhat eccentric Michael Henderson, the event was a sumptuous feast for modern soul fans. The live acts were complimented by some of the most established tastemakers on the UK modern soul scene, spinning tunes across four rooms including Roger Williams, Ralph Tee, Richard Searling, Bigger, Colin Curtis, Richard Searling, Gary Dennis, Mike Stephens, Mike Vitti and tons of other luminaries. Needless to say, SoulCuts took it to Blackpool somewhat large!

Providing a flavour of the quality of cuts played out over the weekend, friend of SoulCuts, SoulEnvison has dropped this essential mix over at his Soundcloud page, providing a sweet snapshot of some of the best modern soul material of 2010, highlighting a number of the monster cuts dropped at Blackpool. SoulCuts Advent Calendar – Day 21 – Rahsaan Patterson – Wonderful Christmastime

21 12 2010

Rahsaan Patterson is undoubtedly one of the greatest soul artists of our generation. Jam-packed with tunes that nimbly walk the fine line between kitsch, sentiment and soul, his Ultimate Gift is a modern classic that plays with our expectations of both Christmas music and Rahsaan Patterson. We’ll give it a full review next Christmas! It’ll be worth revisiting, that’s for sure! In the meantime, check out his decidedly purple version of Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime, a tune that, in its original guise, was ubiquitous each and every Christmas growing up in the 80s. Rahsaan manages to remain faithful to the original while funking it up to the sparkly top of the tree. And, he surely wins the prize for the greatest use of auto-tune of the past 10 years. Check it out:

And Rahsaan’s fabulous new single Easier Said Than Done is now available via iTunes. I cannot wait to hear his new album, Bleuphoria, due Spring 2011. That would be the ultimate gift.

SoulCuts Advent Calendar Day 2 – Rahsaan Patterson – Peace & Joy

2 12 2010

We all love Rahsaan Patterson, right? One of the finest advocates of progressive and timeless soul over the past fifteen years, Rahsaan has long been a firm favourite in the SoulCuts house. At Christmas time, Mrs SoulCuts and I love to throw on Rahsaan’s album, The Ultimate Gift, knock back some mulled cider and fall asleep mid-way through eating a block of his and hers chocolate. If you don’t already own a copy of Rahsaan’s Christmas album, then please go and gift it to yourself. Released in 2008, The Ultimate Gift is rapidly attaining the status of a classic, in my house at least. We’ll be featuring more cuts from this must-buy album over the month of December.

For those of you desperate for some new music from Rahsaan, look no further than the tune below. Easier Said Than Done is a funky-ass affair that sits right in the pocket of Rahsaan’s overall back-catalogue while subtly showing some nice progression. Culled from the upcoming album, Bleuphoria, Easier Said Than Done has definitely got that HEAT! Shout out to Brian Hurst of soulandjazz.com with his impeccable Hurst Selection for opening up our ears to the track back at the start of November. If you don’t already know, get on over to http://www.soulandjazz.com/ and delight in their vast array of high quality soul and jazz podcasts. Nothing but the good stuff!

Oh! And you can now download Rahsaan’s dope new single via iTunes. That’s easily done: click here!
