Hot SoulCut Alert! Miss Baby Sol – Before I Begin (The Journey)

13 12 2010

Miss Baby Sol is undoubtedly one to watch. Having worked with the great and good of the UK scene, her debut EP is now available for pre-order and it sounds like it’ll be well worth slapping down your spondooliks to reserve a copy. With a devil-may-care approach to genre, Before I Begin will take in soul, jazz, reggae and (whisper it) rock. The snippets I’ve heard certainly pushed me to pre-order. Limited to 500 copies, I’d advise a digital trundle over to her site from which you can place your order. Check out her EPK below and a live rendition of the zippy Common Ground from the recent excellent Black Einstein EP, Whatever Happened to Major Tom. It’s a tad early to say it, but, Happy New Year!

Black Einstein asks Whatever Happened to Major Tom?

The more adventurous among us will LOVE this lively and funky EP from Colin Emmanuel’s Black Einstein project. You’ll remember the ‘live’ Eric Roberson stuff he blessed us with earlier in the year. Well, this collection of cuts inspired by the work of David Bowie is on another level, hot like white charcoal at the heart of the pit. Playing with the audience’s expectations of what both a Bowie tribute and a soul-R&B-hip-hop record should sound like, the Black Einstein collective have succeeded in making an EP that sounds nothing like the Thin White Duke, but captures his spirit in spades.

The EP’s rammed with talent, namely Miss Baby Sol, Xavier Barnet, Mystro and Maseo from De La Soul. Soul heads will definitely appreciate the funk of Xavier Barnet’s tracks. For my money, Fascination is the cream cut; a joyous, uplifting dancefloor filler and the very definition of progressive soul. Check it out:

But it’s all dope if you’re in the mood for some energetic, genre-snapping, hip-hop, funk and soul. Don’t take my word for it, trip on over to BE’s Bandcamp page and get some of the good stuff.
