Happy Birthday, Donny!

1 10 2010

Donny Hathaway, one of the greatest artists of all time, was born on October 1st 1945. If you’re at all unfamiliar with his work, please leave here now, go grab a copy of Extensions of a Man and prepare for a life-changing experience!

Someday We’ll All Be Free, from the aforementioned classic album, is the greatest soul song ever recorded, with its breathtaking arrangement and majestic vocal performance, at once deeply personal and universal. Apparently, Donny sat and cried in the studio listening to the final mix. It’s one of the few songs that still gets me every time. While Donny’s loss continues to be felt over thirty years since his death, his music still resonates on a deeper level, right to the very soul. Happy Birthday, Donny!

Oh! And this warm cover version, culled from the Kirk Whalum tribute album, Everything is Everything is pretty tasty. It’s a pretty nice album, in no small part thanks to a beautiful version of You Had To Know, featuring the incomparable Lalah Hathaway. Check out the live version below.
